(CNN)The emergency blankets appear after shark attacks, marathons, earthquakes and even terrorist attacks like the one in Paris

                                             last year. And they have appeared en masse most recently in images of migrants and refugees attempting deadly crossings of the

                                             Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe. They are commonly called space blankets and they look like sheets of foil, silver on one side

                                             and gold on the other.

                                             On several artists, they were posted several photos showing people draped in the blankets snapping selfes during the Berlin

                                             International Film Festival's Cinema for Peace fundraiser at the Berlin Konzerthaus on Monday night. While the move may have

                                             been intended as an act of solidarity with the refugees, some say it may have missed its mark. With the thermal blankets, people will
